An objective of this course is to develop our leadership capacity in a ‘hands on way’. Thus, we explore some
theory and then apply it. Who better to use as a focus subject than – self. In this project you are going to
explore your leadership strengths & weaknesses.
You are first asked to evaluate yourself Vis a vis the self-evaluation. You then are asked to visualize
leadership by creating your leadership mind map. Now that you have an understanding of what leadership is,
your leadership strengths and weaknesses you are to create realistic SMART goals to address what you
perceive as your biggest weakness.
There are 4 parts;
1. Briefly summarize your strengths and areas that need improvement based on the
reflection you just completed. A chart (like a modified SWOT analysis) is acceptable.
2. Create a mind map of your leadership based on your profile and the mind map
completed in Class 5. What are the important criteria for your leadership?
3. Provide 3 SMART goal/objective based on your (3 SMART goals) to address what you
identify as the most important weaknesses. (Briefly justify why you chose them).
4. Submit all: the completed questionnaire, your leadership summary, mind map of your
leadership, and the 5 SMART GOALS as 1 file via BlackBoard NB: Goals and action plan
must be realistic and achievable.

Strengths

I have always wanted to be a leader from a young age, am enthusiastic about leadership
and often look up to various individuals who were able to lead nations and companies to success.
In school, I always volunteered to take leadership positions and act as a link between the teachers
and students. I am very committed to practicing all roles and tasks given to me to the best of my
abilities which is a good quality of a leader. In whichever type of leadership role I am given I
always ensure that I first understand all the factors around the activity so as to give quality
leadership. I have always been very creative and able to make choices that have benefited me in
the future, creativity is not all about solving complex problems, but how you navigate through
the problem to find a relevant solution.
When working with other people I am able to communicate with them well where I listen
to their sentiments and ideas then I provide feedback and hold a discussion with the members on

the best way forward. The good communication skills help me solve problems within a group
easily, am overly quest and do not often go off on my team members because there is a problem
within the group. I instead call all members if the issue involves the whole group or specific
members who have an issue within the group. My last strength is my confidence, I have always
been confident and often wanted to do what others feared to do, and through this, I am able to
face any problem that might face the team or me as a leader.
Weaknesses

As a leader I have characteristics and qualities that have presented themselves as
weaknesses, the first one being my little experience in leadership, with limited experience it’s
hard to understand certain concepts of leadership. Leadership is wide and involves different
attitudes and aspects that help make a leader great, with little experience I cannot adopt some of
these characteristics in my leadership. I am also not able to focus on too many things and often
tackle one activity at a time, as a leader this is a weakness since leadership involves a
determination to work on time and tackle any issue that might present itself. I have the tendency
to compare my leadership qualities to those of others and critically analyze every aspect of my
leadership; this is a weakness since it can lead to the development of low self-esteem. I am
overly introverted and I find it hard sharing my ideas with others, I am always open to listen to
ideas of other people and act on them. Due to self-criticism, I sometimes feel like my ideas are
wrong so I just act on them rather than seek guidance from others.

Smart Goals

Overly critical of myself, I chose to address this weakness since it is something that I am
able to control, being overly critical reduces my self-esteem since I mostly compare myself with

people who are highly experienced and have been in leadership positions for a long time. The
main objective of this issue is to stop comparing myself to others and instead learn new
leadership qualities from my mentors. Criticizing oneself can be a source of strength if you take
it positively and plan on working on your failures you can integrate new skills that can help in
becoming a good leader. I plan on self-critiquing myself on a positive note.
Unable to focus on many things, I chose this weakness since it limits my leadership tasks
and roles within a group I often need an assistant to be able to complete important and urgent
tasks. I am unable to focus on many activities due to my character of being a perfectionist; I
always ensure that one activity is overly done in the best manner possible then pick on another
activity. As much as being a perfectionist makes a quality leader it is important for a leader to be
able to participate in many different activities and be able to produce quality results in all of
them. The best objective for this weakness is to practice with shorter and small activities within
the group; this will help me adapt to the new technique of operation easily and be able to work
with it.
Overly Introvert, I chose this weakness since it involves a character that I am able to
change, being an introvert often excludes me from other members and often creates a rift
between me and my team members. The main objective for dealing with this weakness is to
adopt the character of being more open and trusting my creativity and ability to produce god
ideas. I am confident in myself but not with others, it is very hard for me trust the acceptance of
others on my ideas.
