The Red Crescent is a humanitarian society in Pakistan, which deals with both natural and manmade disasters. It covers regions within the borders of Pakistan and any other near areas, which need its attention. The society has helped individuals affected by floods, earthquake, terror, health problems, blood donation programs and areas affected by hunger. It has established itself as a major humanitarian body in the world working closely with the Red Cross.
The Pakistan crescent society begun in the year 1947 December founded by order of Quaid-e-Azam who became the founder and governor general of the society. The organization has a well-structured leadership, which takes part in governance. Various leaders have been appointed to run the organization since its formation in 1947. Today the head of the society is Dr Saeed Elahi, who was recently appointed as the chairperson. He is a doctor by profession with large experience in the course of his duty.
Mr Qamar Zaman acts as the vice chairperson of the society. He is a prolific entrepreneur with a wide knowledge in the world of finance. Mr Qamar has been recognized with his affiliation towards community involvement and mentorship (Qamar, 2016). The organization has five bodies each with an appointed manger. The manager is responsible for managing his particular unit. Currently Mr Mujeeb Ur Rahman Shami, Mr Qaiser Ahmad Sheikh, Ms Nina Mahmood Akbar, Ms Nadira Panjwani manages different bodies.
The Pakistan crescent society has branches in major areas in Pakistan. Various individuals who all report to the headquarters in Islamabad lead this branch. According to the Pakistan crescent webpage. Ms Farzhana Naek is the Chairperson of the Sindh Provincial Branch. Mian Muhammad Hanif (SI) leads the Punjab Provincial Branch. The KP Provincial Branch is under Lt Gen (R) Mohammad Hamid Khan, HI (M). The Balochistan Provincial Branch is led by Sardar Naseer Tareen, AJK Branch managed by Mr. Z.A Shah, PRC FATA Branch run by Ikram Ullah Jan Kuki Khel and lastly PRC GB Branch, which is under Mr Muhammad Wali (PRCS, 2013).The leadership of the Pakistan Red Crescent is clear, each with knowledge of his own responsibilities and duties
The humanitarian society aims at getting into a majority of Pakistan cities to improve its efficiency. It has its major concern in involving the politicians as diplomats in the increasing the humanitarian role to influence the government in coming up with methods to boost it’s performance. The Pakistan Red Crescent has involved itself globally as it has participated in reconnecting families scattered in different countries due to natural disasters. This has been through its collaboration with the United States in developing a website where families can search for missing persons globally (International Committee of the Red Cross, 2014)
The group’s major affiliate is the government. Through a meeting and a briefing of how the group is, performing the president acknowledged the efforts of the group towards humanitarian factors and ensured that the government will provide much support to the group and work together towards enhancing humanity. To enhance lab extension, The body through its announcement by the secretary general said that it had formed a joint venture with the Gulf Marketing International. This joint venture will enable it to access quality lab blood test. This venture will enable the organization in providing quality blood in cases of emergency.
The Canadian Red Cross society has struck an agreement with the Pakistan Red Crescent to help it in installing power pumps for pumping clean water to residents. This will improve the communities to access clean safe drinking water, which will increase the health of the residents. The group has also been linked with the Pakistanis living abroad. They have assured the group of their support through Dr Saeed Elahi to help the group establish a state of the art cardiac hospital. Dr. Imran has assured the group of his support due to its efficient methods to deal with emergencies with cases of terror attacks. He took six ambulances with him and offered a blood donation to casualties in one of the major terror attack in Pakistan.
The organization has different units each performing independently, but all in common objective of the organization as a whole. The Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) unit deals with things such as Organizational Development, Health Services, Disaster Response, and Dissemination of Humanitarian Values International. While issues such as National Societies, prisoners of war, conflict are a mandate of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) division and the National Societies (Pakistan Red Crescent (PRC, 2015)
Command and Historical Development
The order of command flows from the headquarters, which are in Islamabad. Those in the top ranks involve the junior leaders in coming up with decisions which is then communicated to all the divisions and branches of the organization. The Pakistan Red Crescent was formed to protect the health and life of humankind, and seek to alleviate human suffering. Today it has about 97 million volunteers worldwide. It has National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the international federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent societies and the international committee of Red Cross, which work independently, but for the common good of the whole organization.
The organizations developed after the world war to help in resettling the injured people. The war left majority of the people displaced, lacking food, and difficult to access clean drinking water. They stepped in to call for peace and ease human suffering. It is during this period of helping relieve human suffering caused by the war that the Pakistan Red Crescent was formed. It worked closely with the Red Cross in executing the duties of the Red Cross society. Later it became independent, but still working at the same core goals of helping improve human life. Today it has developed to cater for the majority of natural disasters affecting the lives of people. It has engaged in providing clean water, helped in settling people and rescuing them after earthquakes, terrorism, floods, and donation of blood.
The body receives funding both internal sources and external sources. The government of Pakistan the president of Pakistan has vowed to help the organization in achieving its objectives by allocating funds for the organization; local donors too are a source of income. Entrepreneurs and other philanthropic individuals have helped the body through donating funds. Externally the body has funding from International nongovernmental institutions like the Canadian red cross have provided fiancé to start projects that will benefit the people, foreign governments and Pakistanis living abroad also send funds to help the organization towards achieving their objectives.
Pakistan faces many disasters. This includes manmade disasters and natural disasters ranging from floods and avalanches, landslides, earthquakes, drought, mud flows with this wide ranging threats that faces majority of the population the organization has to focus on areas that pose the greatest threat and that need help much faster. Consideration of the parts that need much help has to be made based on the comments of the various units, which the society works with.
The strength of the organization is its good reputation to the public and the international family. This enables it to gain access to finance, volunteers who decide to help the organization. This it has established itself as a strong organization capable of dealing with major disasters today. The organization’s recruitment is transparent and available to all suitable applicants. It seeks to develop its staff through regular training and other development programs. The Pakistan Red Crescent also considers the idea of gender equity on its recruitment (Daily Jang, 2014)
The Pakistan Red Crescent Tactics, Weapon, and Target
The group uses volunteers, donor funding and its staff in the general conduct of their key objectives. Through this, it is able to access wide geographical areas. The major weapon of the Pakistan Red Crescent is its committed donors, the government, and its good reputation in the society. The group’s target population is those affected by both natural and manmade disasters. This are the people affected by landslides, earthquakes, floods, terror activities, drought and health problems (Khan, 2009). The organization is recognized for quality training of its staff which has improved the quality of service provided to the public.
Political Affiliation and Support Base
The group does not associate itself with any political party, religion, or nation. Its major concern is to reduce human suffering without discriminating. The society gets its support from the government of Pakistan, local donors, foreign NGO’s, Pakistani citizens in foreign countries and other foreign governments. It is through been neutral that has enabled it reach different geographical areas and gain support across the whole world.
The Pakistan government has provided finance to the Red Crescent group in order for them to meet their financial obligation. Significant Events, Recent Activities, and Projected Activities
Creation of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) took place in the year 1919, which linked both the Red Cross and the Pakistan Red Crescent. In the 1947, it was marked by the formation of the Pakistan Red Crescent by order of the government. In 1991, the society was renamed to Red Crescent societies. The president has assured the society full support in its humanitarian duties. There is also installation of water pumps in the Tharparkar region to pump clean water to the people. The organization aims to collect a blood donation from around 0.1 million donors by the year 2020.
