Using Driscoll's model: What? So what? What now?
Identify a COVID-19 scenario that you were part of in your practice as
a nurse or that you witnessed.
Using a Driscoll’s framework, tell the story of your reflection in 250
words. Make a scenario more related to our society in UAE.

Driscoll’s Model
What
Recently, I had an encounter with an elderly patient who had a severe case of asthma; the
thought of the patient having contracted the novel Coranavirus caused anxiety in the entire health
facility. However, my colleagues and I were tasked with caring for the patient and offering the
required medical help. A background check on the patient’s health record revealed that she had
battled with asthma for quite a long time. Her breathing difficulties that she exhibited prompted
me to recommend her to undertake a Covid19 test as it was a requirement since the outbreak in
UAE. The patient’s Covid19 test turned positive and was thus put in isolation as we worked
around the clock in an effort to stabilize her condition.
So What
Though the patient was initially in denial regarding the outcome of her results, I
specifically talked to her and stressed on the importance of taking all the medicines prescribed
and following the recommended WHO guidelines in an effort to safeguard her health and that of
the people around her. I also talked her out of the denial which from how she confided in me,
came from the fear of facing stigma that was currently faced by most Covid19 patients (1).
According to the set nursing standards, nurses are required to maintain ethical nursing practices,
and this explains why I conducted myself professionally despite the anxiety that the presence of
this patient in the facility had created (2).
Now What?

My encounter with this patient made me realize the importance of proper communication
within the nursing practice (1). The fact that I spent time explaining to the patient on the need of
taking the prescribed medicines went a long way in ensuring that we stabilized her condition on
time which eventually saved her life. I have also learn that enhancing a good patient and nurse
relationship enables the patient to easily confide in you and this explains why the patient voiced
her fears regarding admitting that she had contracted the virus.
