Solution
Context
I happened to have been chosen as the group leader of a team where I was assigned the
task of conducting volunteer work in school. My main role as the group leader was to unite the
members towards achieving a shared goal which involved assigning them duties and making sure
that they complete all the assigned tasks. My main followers were my fellow students whom we
were in the same class, thus it was easy to work together with them. The total number of
followers was 65 and who apparently had the passion of carrying out volunteer work, thus it was
easy to lead them.
Analysis
On my case, I used transformational leadership and skill approach leadership.
Transformational leadership is a type of leadership method where followers and their leaders
assist each other in raising to greater heights of motivation and morality. As a transformational
leader, therefore, I had to support my followers, encourage them and I also set clear goals that
they would work towards achieving. I also had to be a role model whom my followers would
emulate through acting in a manner that is right and also treating them fairly so that they also can
treat each other with respect. I also displayed some of the transformational factors such as
personal consideration of my team members, I used inspirational motivation and I used
creativity and intellectual stimulation. I was able to demonstrate these factors by individualizing
the needs of my members and motivating them. In spite of that, I was unable to creatively
enhance innovation among the team members.
I also applied the skill approach leadership style which involves focusing on certain
skills, knowledge, and abilities which can be developed or learned. I used this leadership method

by using my own ability competencies and knowledge to achieve the desired objectives and
goals. I also utilized the three components of skills model which were visionary, community and
self. I, therefore, had to consider these three elements while leading my team. Also, I had to
apply conceptual skills in order to work with available ideas and concepts presented by my
followers. In addition to that, I made use of technical skills where I had to explore my team
knowledge and abilities needed for them to complete assigned tasks. Through applying human
or interpersonal skills I was able to interact with my team, hence providing room for them to air
their views.
Based on the two theories that I, I actually managed to be an effective leader. I was an
effective leader since as a team, we were able to achieve the set goals and objectives.
Additionally, we were also able to work together as there were rare cases of conflict between the
group members. Based, on the two theories applied I managed to lead my team effectively.
However, in order to be a more effective leader I would have motivated my employees in order
for them to achieve better results than what we actually obtained. This motivation would have
perhaps been in the form of a gift, a reward, praise or even recognition, which would prompt
them into working better than what they actually achieved.
Conclusion
My major strengths as a leader are that I was able to handle the needs and the differences
of my team members. I personally consider my team member as an asset, hence if their
individual needs are met then they can work more effectively towards the set goals. However,
my weakness is that I tend to ignore the significance of motivating followers, which is very
significant for encouraging employees to perform better. Therefore, based on my strengths and

weakness I would basically excel in leading senior employees in large firms as there are rare
cases of rewarding. However, I would struggle in leading high school students where the
motivation of students plays a significant role in impacting student performance. As a result, I
would to completely become an effective leader I would ensure that fully utilize the motivation
of followers and employees. I would also ensure that there is also an effective coordination
among the team members. Therefore, to improve these aspects I will begin by rewarding
employees and encouraging them to work as a team.
