The purpose of the assignment is to explore, describe and understand the lived experiences of manager,
practitioners and professionals about green job in the UAE-based organizations.
Abu Dhabi is ambitious to develop world-class infrastructure that is not only capable of supporting and
sustaining the anticipated levels of economic growth but acts as a catalyst for that growth through its Abu
Dhabi Economic Vision 2030 Objectives. Specifically, Objective 24 was strategized for Abu Dhabi
recognizes the need to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability to ensure long-term
sustainability and preserve the quality of life of its citizens. The Emirate is, therefore, enforcing
compliance with environmental legislation and creating incentives for people and businesses to respect
the environment through green job. It is expected that this study will significantly contribute to:
1. Avoid misperception of green job program and structure
2. Embed green job into dynamic organizational culture
3. Create accountable-ownership of green job to everyone
4. Enhance leadership role to drive the green culture
5. Motive dynamic organizational culture to drive ethical behavior towards green job

1.   What is your current title?    A project manager.
2.   How long have you held your current title?             Two years.
3.   How long have you been with your present organization?             I have been working at Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (ADFEC) for a period of ten years, from November 2009 to January 2013 as Project Engineer- Operations. I am tasked with designing the control and automation concept of the Double Effect Absorption Plant. From the year 2015- December 2016, i was appointed as assistant Manager, tasked to lead the technical group to prepare for professional resolution of the solar PV plant and wind turbines bid. January 2017, i was appointed as Project Manager, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company.
4.   What is the industry of your present organization?             My current industry is a renewable energy-based organization, intending to increase renewable energy production, reduce reliance on fossils fuels, and adopts commercially available resolutions in the renewable energy and sustainable real estate to address the sustainability problems in UAE.
5.   Have you ever developed, implemented, and/or managed any green economy, green occupation or green collar workers in your current organization? Theme: Green Economy

I have managed various green economy tasks; prepare the overall O and M budgets for bids for PV solar plants.  I am tasked with making proposals meant for Wind tenders and PV solar plants in Masdar City. Also, i negotiate the commercial tenders in MENA sections, tasked with managing green employees, i.e., support stuff technicians with innovative ideas on the PV development project.

6.   What are the most significant challenges that you had to address in creating and maintaining green economy as part of your organizational culture? Theme: Challenges

Few challenges that hinder the implementation and development activities of the Masdar project include increased poverty, increased dependency on non-renewable energy sources, intensified poverty, and increased border and local conflicts. Also, the environmental and social challenges hinder the implementation of a green economy as the overall objective of the project, which includes;  limited investment access, entrepreneurs have no public support, environmental legislation is inadequate, and governmental Islamic bureaucracy. Many opponents of sustainable planning are opposing it firmly on the grounds of the so-called social exclusivity or eco-cities, and the argument that the mode of living and continuing economic development is incompatible.  Economic forces in the work industry are also making it difficult for the manager to integrate an excellent green economy for environmental sustainability.

7.   How did you respond to or address those challenges?             Theme: How to address sustainability issues

I address the challenges through a partnership with renewable energy-based organizations to provide the technical support required.  Public awareness has been the top priority to address the problem and enlighten the public on the positive side of the project to reduce environmental pollution and facilitate clean energy production. As a manager, i have incorporated an excellent and a strategic management team of; specialists, architectures, investors, builders, and designers based for the overall Masdar project to be fully developed Glasmeier and Christopherson (2015, p. 66). The team has excellent, proficient skills and expertise in the development of renewable energy technologies. To improve and establish fruitful solutions in a sustainable environment and Renewable Energy sector. Also, various partnerships with international companies have helped me address the issue. International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), national organizations like Siemens, and academic institutions including The Masdar Institute of Khalifa University of Science and technology to enhance a green economy.

 

8.   What are the most common areas of sustainability that you had to address? Theme: key Sustainability Areas

Sustainable energy production landmarks, sustainable projects and buildings, and Green Building Prototypes, are key areas I consider for sustainability. Janajreh, Su and Alan (2013, p. 12), Wind Tower and PV solar plant are among the sustainable renewable energy projects to facilitate production of electricity with carbon free emissions. Sustainable constructions and buildings such as Tech Park, The Accelerator Building, Krypto Labs, Leonardo Residence, and Mohammed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence to develop required knowledge on renewable energy development applications and research (Reiche 2010, P. 55).

9.   What did you determine the cause of sustainability non-compliance that may affect the green job in your organization?             The social economic forces on energy and overreliance on non-renewable energy sources, increased environmental pollution, fossil fuels dependency, waste reduction are key environmental non-compliance affecting Renewable energy development venture.
10.  How did you create a green organizational culture through the administration of the green program? Theme: Green program

As a manger I have established a well-developed organizational culture through, creating an organization culture with internal and external integration of well experienced expertise team members to provide technical solutions and ideas. With implementation of a green program in Masdar City, the overall objective is to create a social and environmental sustainability rather than profit accumulation.

11.  What impact do you think your organization’s culture has on green program’s effectiveness?             Positive impacts are realized from effective organizational culture implementation. Effective team collaboration from the human resource team to investors, partnerships, and institutions to develop strategies and technological solutions in achieving the company’s vision, mission, and goals.
12.  What lessons have been learned about creating and maintaining an effective green job program that promotes ethical organizational behavior? Theme: Lessons learned

Creating an effective green program has been an efficient tool in boosting consumer confidence and reducing financial liabilities. The company is dedicated to achieving the overall objective of providing clean, renewable energy sources to promote environmental sustainability. Also, the program enhances leadership and employee collaboration, which leads to improved decision making.

14.  Please describe the event or events from which you learned those lessons. Theme: Major event

The UAE Green program festival” prompted various lessons linked to the importance of creating green job programs in a company to promote environmental sustainability (Gornicki, 2015, p.22). The main festival message is to encourage a carbon-free world, clean energy production with minimal environmental pollution. The event analyzed the impacts of sustainable modes of transport, global economic obstacles, and environmental challenges posed by various organizational practices. The event also presented awareness of adequate means of transportation, renewable energy sources, and unique, sustainable practices ad green packages to raise awareness on the importance of natural resources preservation.

15.  Describe any best practices that you relating to the creation and maintaining of effective green job programs. Theme: Effective Green Jobs Programs

Holding key stakeholders meeting to offer an opportunity to learn active green jobs programs initiatives, as a manager, development of renewable energy-based organizations as one of the actions to create effective green jobs programs.

16.  How did you find out these best practices?             Through my extensive working experience as an assistant manager. The company incorporated green programs to enhance a productive employee relations and decision making.
17. Why do you believe they have applicability to other organizations?             I believe that, Green programs boost the collaboration of team members and management to enhance effective decision making. Also, green program practices aim at promoting environmental sustainability to reduce environmental pollution, which applies to other organizations.
