Introduction

A zoo is a shortened word for zoological parks; this is a place where animals are placed
on display for people to see. Hill and Broom (2009, p. 531) explains that zoos are often small
and very confined making the living conditions of animals living there very poor. Many animal
rights activists fight against zoo keeping indicting that it is a cruel act against animals. However,
zoo advocates and preservationists argue that zoos are more beneficial to animals than they are a
threat and they help in reducing the extinction of animals and species by breeding them.

Arguments against Zoo Keeping

Animal activist indicates that zoo keeping is a cruel act against animal’s especially large
animals such as lions, elephants or giraffes that thrive by living in the wild. Animals also feel
depressed when their freedom is limited which can lead to poor health among the animals
enhancing their suffering. According to Hosey, Melfi, and Pankhurst, (2013, p. 45) most people
who visit the zoo only visit with the purpose of entertainment which is not a good enough reason
to keep animals in captivity, and for the few who claim to learn about the animals gather very
little information since most of the animals change their behaviors to adapt to captivity.
Learning about animals while they live in the wild provides a good view of the animal’s
natural behavior and personalities which is a reliable source of information. Hochadel (2011, p
183) indicates that over the years there have been many complains about the cruelty of
zookeepers towards animals, in this case, cruelty does not necessarily mean mistreatment but
lack of enough knowledge to know what the animals need. A good example is the case of US
where the New York Times magazine shed a light on over 390 elephant fatalities in zoos across

the US in the past few years. Most of the fatalities resulted from poor living conditions among
the elephants which caused a lot of stress on the animals leading some to attack each other.

Arguments for Zoos

Stead (2002, p. 34) indicates that zoos are very important in educating people on how to
treat and appreciate animals which is a significant issue in today's world. Zoos save endangered
species by providing them with a safe environment away from potential prey and poachers who
might harm the animals. A good example is the Arabian Oryx which was hunted to extinction in the
wild; however, the phoenix zoo was able to keep some of the Oryx animals in their zoos increasing
their numbers significantly in the world. According to the association of zoos and aquariums, the
standards for zoo keeping have been heightened to ensure that animals are kept in safety. A good
zoo is one that provides an enriched habitat where the animals never get bored and are well cared
for. Zoo practitioners also argue that visiting the zoo promotes family relations since it is more
fun when all members of a family visit the zoo creating more memorable experiences. Zoos also
rehabilitate animals that are deemed wild and have nobody to take care of them.

Conclusion

Zoo practitioners and animal activists argue that they both save animals which to some extent
are correct. The demand for Zoos is growing each day due to the high rate of animal poaching and
animal lovers who often visit the zoos to interact with their favorite animals. It is highly likely that
Zoos will remain in operation for a very long time so it is best to ensure that zoological conditions for
animals living in captivity are the best possible. Zoology laws also need to be very strict such that

those violating animal health and safety codes are not just properly punished, but also denied future
use of animals.
