Chapter 15 and 16 Human Resource Management Summary
In chapter fifteen, I have been able to expand my knowledge on various employee rights and responsibilities. According to Mathis, Jackson & Valentine (2014), employees have been at longer heads with their employers to constant breach of their employment rights.
This chapter has helped me to learn various rights which hold the relationship between employees and their employers. Such rights include the employment at will right, rights relating to wrongful employment termination, rights relating to just cause in case of disciplinary action on an employee as well as the rights to due process in establishment of claims against the employee.
The chapter also gave a deep insight on the rights to accessing employees’ records and their freedom of speech. According to Randhawa (2007), most employees have been deprived of their employment rights by their employers due to lack of knowledge of existence of such rights. The process of employee termination has also been duly addressed. Termination is the final disciplinary action towards an employee.
Chapter sixteen mainly highlights on the relations of unions and management with employees and employers. According to Simons (2011), employee union is illustrated as a recognized association of workers which advocates for common interest of its members through collective bargaining. Generally, unions are formed by employee to be able to fight for their rights collectively. Employers on the other hand refute the actions of unions and claim that unions have got a negative influence on the employees.
They also accuse them of destabilizing the work structure. The current nature of unions in U.S and their history has been established in the chapter. Unions have been widely accepted across the world and are used to bargain for the rights of the employees worldwide. Unions have given employees a platform to negotiate for their rights (Mathis, Jackson & Valentine, 2014).
