Reasons Why an IT professional should be licensed by the government

Reasons Why an IT professional should be licensed by the government

Week 3 Homework Assignment

1. What strategies can a company employ to maintain trade secrecy, given the high turnover
among IT workers?
2. Should all IT professionals be licensed by the government? Why or why not?
3. Recommend a course of action. Your old roommate from college was recently let go from his
firm during a wave of employee terminations to reduce costs. You two have kept in touch over
the six years since school, and he has asked you to help him get a position in the IT organization
where you work. You offered to review his résumé, make sure that it gets to the “right person,”
and even put in a good word for him. However, as you read the résumé, it is obvious that your
friend has greatly exaggerated his accomplishments at his former place of work and even added
some IT-related certifications you are sure he never earned. What would you do?

4. Recommend a course of action. The daughter of the firm’s CEO is scheduled to participate in a
job interview for an entry level position in the IT organization next week. You are a second-year
employee in your firm’s IT organization who will participate in the interview process. You will be
one of three people who will interview her to form an assessment and make a group decision
about whether or not she will be offered the position. How do you handle this situation?
5. Research online for CompTIA certifications: Security+ & Network+. Describe the benefit of
obtaining this certification to your career. Does these certifications appeal to IT companies?
Then, Research the benefit of studying and obtaining CISSP certification to your career? How
companies perceive the value of CISSP in Gulf countries?

You may use the Internet to search for an answer. However, you need to list the references used.

Solution

Question 1
Companies own patents and trademarks, which create uniqueness in the business. Trade
secrets on the other hand, comprise formula, method, or information that gives the company a
competitive advantage. Some scholars define it as anything that takes time, money, and effort to
develop and the owner needs to keep it a secret from the competitors to know about (Hannah,
2005, P. 73). Trade secrets role of competitive advantage creation makes them important in life
of a company, thus the need of their protection from determined adversary (industrial spies and
disgruntled people).Establishing proprietary information and categorization of results are a few
of the tactics that most companies apply to ensure such secrets are safe.
The other strategy is restriction of the information to only those whose are suppose to
have it, thus limiting the possibility of the information getting to unnecessary persons. However,
it is important to note that this is only possible if the employees receive education on the
importance of keeping information confidential. Creation of passwords and systems and use of
software that prevent computers from hacking is another way that helps keep the information
confidential. The IT workers must sign the confidentiality agreement in that company and the
consequences of breaching the signed agreement is made clear to them before commencement
duties (Hannah, 2005, P. 79). Only employees with access to proprietary information sign the
confidentiality agreement. Companies protect themselves in a deal where nondisclosure
arrangements ensure that they have something unique that make them marketable.
Question 2

WEEK 3 HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT 3

The government should license IT professionals because license marks professionalism.
It is a standard recognized by employees and their clients, by governments and by the public as
an assurance of dedication, skill, and quality (Hannah, 2005, P. 83). The public respects licensed
IT employee and this help rejuvenate their self-esteem, which results to delivery of top-notch
services to their clients. It helps in career development by enhancing importance, showing
commitment to profession and demonstrating heightened leadership and management skills.
License creates flexibility where it opens up career options, therefore allowing the owner to go as
far as the initiative and talent may take them. Even though licensing by the government is good,
it should only ensure that those who acquire that knowledge from valued institutions receive that
license to help protect the public from cases of fraud and theft.
Question 3
Integrity at the workplace plays a major role. The right way to handle this would be first
talking to my friend and help him understand the importance of integrity in job application and
the risk he would put me in. After the talk he should decide whether to rewrite an integral resume
or not. Upon deciding to write an honest resume, I will help with the details to avoid any more
lies (Beckerman-Rodau, 2002, n. p). After such activities, it would be right to submit it to the
“right person.” In case he decides not to write another resume, it would be good to leave him or
get the resume and explain the whole situation to the “right person” all to ensure the company
gets the right employees. Integrity is of high value than fake friendship and should not be at stake
no matter what is on the ground. However, if interested in keeping the friendship ties close, I can
hand over the resume to the “right person” and explain everything accordingly, then keep
distance and let the right person deal with him to avoid emergence of hatred.

WEEK 3 HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT 4

Question 4
It does not matter whether one’s husband or father is the Chief Executive officer of a
company or not. What one’s role is as an interviewer is to provide the persons with the best
qualities that the job require for delivery of top-notch services. In addition to this, every
company always has values that must be adhered to accordingly and as an interviewer, I have no
option but to make the right decision no matter what the consequences will be(Beckerman-
Rodau, 2002, n. p). That is my stand.
Question 5
CompTIA A+ certification proves that one has the basic necessary skills as an IT service
technician, thus credibility and high value for a person who posses these certificates. Most
recruiting agencies prefer candidates with more certifications in computer. Comp TIA A+
features on the top list of preferred list of certifications for the job seeker. The certificate offers
credit towards other certifications. IT companies are always impressed by these certifications as
they always employ people in their own certification tracks for top-notch service delivery. CISSP
certifications are mandatory in many companies that use computer techniques in their jobs
(Beckerman-Rodau, 2002, n. p). CISSP in gulf countries is important because they have dual
certification where one undertakes other courses as ISSEP, ISSAP or ISSMP. They offer award
winning proprietary curriculum. The techniques that CISSP offers help individuals to deal with
contemporary problems in the workplace.
