Solution

What is famine?
Famine is a phenomenon that is believed to occur under the following conditions occurs
to a given population. 20% receives less than 2100 kilocalories of food daily, 30% of the young
are malnourished, there is death of two for every a thousand people, and there is evidence of
pandemic illnesses with less to four liters of water in a day, a population settlement that is very
dispersed (United Nations 2015). Famine can also be described as the hunger crisis at its most
undesirable extreme. It is an emotive term in the sense that it refers to the people without food on
a large scale. In summary, it is an acute shortage of food and can affect all forms of creatures.
2. Which countries have famine, and how many percents?
Famine is a serious matter to be addressed since it threatens the existence of human
beings. According to Allen, 2014, there are over 870 million people over the worlds that are
hungry due to lack of food. Of this population, according to World Food Programme, 98 % of
this population lives in the developing states or the third world states that perversely produce
most of the food reserves. Such countries include Burundi, Eritrea, Comoros, Tunor Leste,
Sudan, Chad, Yemen Republic, Ethiopia, Madagascar, and Zambia. A greater percentage of the
states affected by famine are from African Continent.
3. What are the solutions of famine?
Drought is the leading cause of the continuous existence of famine in most regions
though not the only cause. The leaders of the most affected regions need to meet and strategize
on better ways to increase the amount of food supply in their particular countries. They should
come up with strategies to put in place that will help in curbing the challenge of water resulting
from drought and formulation of food regulations that will attract sustainable investors. They
should also find mechanisms of implementing a raised agricultural productivity and development

of mitigation measures to respond to the climate change calamity. Implementation of such
strategies together with the provision of incentives to support the practices will substantially lead
elimination of famine in these regions. To combat the issue of famine in most states, Barack
Obama came up with an ideology which if adopted can significantly contribute towards
achieving a solution. He advised on curbing climate change and argued that, “The world must
come together to confront climate change. There is little scientific dispute that if we do nothing,
we will face more drought, famine and mass displacement that will fuel more conflict for
decades” (Your Dictionary, 2016).
4. Effects of famine
Illness effects: Famine is accompanied by infections since there is less food for the
sufferings residents. When there is reduced food supply, some parents may not give equal
amounts of food to the girls and the boys. Lower fertility: This is because poor families during
the famine season delayed in having children because they would not afford adequate food and
meets all the basic needs for the children to grow, which later results in the dropping of infertility
level. Anemia: Famine leads to alteration in the health distribution amongst the newborn children
and causes anemia and besides, it influences the infant's health state negatively. Basing on the
famine in Eastern Africa, Josette Sheeran ascertained that, “If any good comes out of the current
Famine in the Horn of Africa — amidst the pictures of mothers carrying dying babies at their
shriveled breasts and hollow-eyed children with swollen bellies and matchstick limbs — it will
be galvanizing the world on the need to ensure access to nutritious food for the world’s most
vulnerable people” (Your Dictionary, 2016).

5. What should we do to avoid it? ( awareness)
Famine can be prevented by implementation of numerous procedures though it is
significantly influenced by politics and policies of a given jurisdiction. The adoption of modern
technology in agriculture is the primary solution that can be implemented to curb the challenge
of famine in the developing states. Using genetic engineering in the crop propagation can
significantly reduce the effect of diseases, which lead to harvesting of low yields. This is because
genetic engineering can produce species, which are highly resistance to infestations. This
knowledge can be imposed to farmers via workshops, training, and advertisement via media.
6. Causes of famine
This dragon can be caused by various reasons such as floods, drought, and the earthquake
amongst inadequate food and poor food distribution to some particular parts of an area. For
instance, Somalis suffered from very severe drought for a period. This resulted in a production
failure accompanied by a reduction in production crops. This led to a rise in food demand and
eventually food inflation, implicating that the important food was twice the standard pricing.
This meant that majority suffered from severe food shortage and children malnourishment. As
the drought persisted, the number of livestock kept also began going depleting. This can be
concurred by the words of Michael Chossudovsky who said that, “The experience of Somalia
shows that famine in the late 20 th century is not a consequence of shortage of food. On contrary,
famines are spurred on as a result of global oversupply of grain staples" (Your Dictionary, 2016).
