Abstract
This study gives a preliminary analysis on iPads and their effect on Childrens behavior
from the parent’s perspective. Children in the modern day world come across and utilize
technology constantly both at home and in school, one such technology is the iPad. This study
investigated how parents viewed and understood the effects of iPads on their child’s behavior in
terms of learning. The study was conducted among 54 parents with children in M-Shallah
preparatory school in Dubai, the questionnaires were distributed among the parents who had
children in third, fifth and sixth grade. It was established that indeed iPads have affected the way
children behave academically in terms of performance and their general knowledge on things
not necessarily taught in class.
Introduction
As technology becomes incorporated into our day to day lives and the shift to a digital
era, schools are putting effort to utilize technology in coming up with the best learning
experience for children.Initially, Information and Communication Technology was segregated to
a Computer room outside the main classroom where computers were stored. Nowadays there
has been a shift in technology where smaller devices have been tested and used within the
classroom setting as a tool to help children better their lessons. An estimated 70 percent of
schools in developed countries such as the UK now uses tablet computers in their classes, in 9
percent of the schools, children have an individual iPad for every pupil.Between the years 2015-
2016, the number of iPad tablets is expected to increase from 450,000 to 920,000. Studies from
teachers perspective have shown that use of tablets has a positive impact on the children, mainly

because they motivate pupils who may be otherwise disengaged and when the tablet gets home,
parents and the entire family become involved in the study of their child.
Like any change, this shift has had an impact on how children behave when learning and
interacting with others as well as the environment. Parents interact mostly with their children, a
mother or father will be able to notice a change in their child’s behavior before the use of an iPad
and after the introduction. Has the child academic learning improved and what’s improvement
in terms of general knowledge, not necessarily the one taught in class.
Purpose of the Study
The study was aimed at establishing the effects of iPads on the child’s behavior as their parents
understood it.
Questions of the study
The study aimed at answering the below questions
What parents had to say, on how iPads have affected their child’s academic performance
and out of class general knowledge.
What is the response of parents on how iPads have affected the social relationship
between their children and others.
Hypothesis of the Study
The study seeks to hypothesize the following;
Parents have established that there is a relationship between the use of iPads in schools
and the academic performance of a student as well as their general knowledge.
Parents have established that there is a relationship between the use of iPads and how
children interacts with their family and friends.
EFFECTS OF IPAD ON CHILDREN BEHAVIOR, FROM THE PARENT’S PERSPECTIVE
Limitation of the Study
This study was conducted among parents who may be biased in favor of their children
academic performance and general knowledge and how they interact with others, for example in
the family or friends. The study was also limited by the small number of respondents, only 54
parents and that all of them were drawn from the same school, the respondents were mainly
women as the men were either busy at work or unwilling to fill questionnaires. They thought
most information about the children was with their wives, this made our study to be gender
biased.
Literature Review
In the recent years, information and communication technologies are gaining a firm
ground, both not just in the daily lives of the young and the so not young, but also the education
system where they see ICT as the desired future of education in our society. Technologies are
transforming society greatly from the top to the bottom and particularly where education is
concerned and the public’s expectation on what the education should be like. As it is referred, the
Google era has enabled people to view the world on a digital lens and teachers can get
knowledge at will through interactive Smartboards or touch pads (KARSENTI, and FIEVEZ,
2013). Philosopher Michael Serren interprets the great shift of technology and the presence of
iPads in the classroom as a threat to the so called traditional interpersonal relationships and that
peer relationships will be advocated. Some authors consider this a big advantage, that sees it as a
form of teaching that considers the world in its inclusiveness enabling the students to connect
what they learn in class to what they is happening in the real world (Karsenti, 2015, p2411).
Authors from different quotas have viewed technology as a never ending opportunity for both
EFFECTS OF IPAD ON CHILDREN BEHAVIOR, FROM THE PARENT’S PERSPECTIVE
formal and informal learning, they say technosocial changes have led to a rethink of what the
term digital divide means. In most cases, inequality in accessing technology is beginning to be
seen inequalities that perpetuate a digital underclass between those who can be able to use the
technologies and those who cannot be able to put them into good use, between those who are
using technology to learn and those using it for fun and texting. A CEFRIO report (2011) that
young people use technology mostly for their amusement as compared to learning, this
amusement mainly involves using of ICT to contact and link with their friends. This therefore
brings the suggestion that we should not look at technology and how they have increased, but
rather we should look at how they are being used to facilitate learning, are they objective enough.
UNESCO in its 2015 report has emphasized in the ongoing rapid development of mobile
technologies, but has gone further to reveal the enormous benefits and challenges that have
emanated from this shift towards an Information Communication Technology based teaching in
the schools (Robinson, 2013, p11).
The study
Research Design
The study aimed at establishing whether parents had discovered any changes in their children
behaviors, with the use of iPads as a learning tool and a social networking tool (Mitchell, and
Jolley, 2012).
Participants
The respondents in this study were parents fom M-Shallah school who had children in third, fifth
and sixth grades.
Instruments
One instrument was used in this study:
EFFECTS OF IPAD ON CHILDREN BEHAVIOR, FROM THE PARENT’S PERSPECTIVE
Questionnaire
The questionnaire was distributed among the parents of pupils in third, fifth and sixth
grade at M-Shallah whose children had benefited from an iPad e-learning program from the
government of the day. The questionnaire was distributed to 54 parents to be answered and only
44 were returned and the questionnaire was divided into two parts, with the first part having the
personal information about the parents/ guardians and the second part made up of questions on
the research problem (Galesic, and Bosnjak, 2009, p349).

Conclusion
This study has shown that iPads have an impact on the children behavior, in the way they
learn in school and how it affects their academic performance. There has been an improvement
on how children with I Pads perform, most of the parents have confessed that their children are
making good progress and their knowledge on things not taught in class has improved. I pads
have also affected the social life of children, there is a tendency of them withdrawing from
family gatherings such as watching TV together in the evening, mostly they are in their rooms
chatting with friends online.Outdoor activities such as Weekend visits to football matches or
bicycle riding have decreased as most of their time is spent indoors. Most parents are positive
that I Pads have been beneficial as far as learning is concerned, but there is still some few who
EFFECTS OF IPAD ON CHILDREN BEHAVIOR, FROM THE PARENT’S PERSPECTIVE
think that the new technology has worsened things for their kids, they have noticed no change in
academic performance. One notable feature about the whole thing is that parents understand the
importance of the government, teachers and parents get involved with the whole issue so as to
avoid negative effects that may ensue from the technology (Hills, and Khairat,2014).
Recommendations
Below are some of the things parents should do to ensure that iPads are beneficial to their
children and at the same time cautioning them from the negative consequences.
1.Parents should encourage the use of the new technology iPads have been seen to improve
academic performance rather by connecting the children with the real world.
2.Parents should engage their children in counseling on how to better use the iPad, for their own
benefit, for example, educate them on social media addiction and how it can affect their social
life as well as their academic performance.
3.The school and the government should offer civic education to both parents and teachers and
children in the new development in technology, educating them on the implications of the new
development.
