Introduction

Corporate social responsibility can be defined as the efforts a company makes in
incorporating the employees’ needs, shareholders’ needs, societal needs and environmental needs
in their daily economic operations. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has developed for the
past two centuries; it began with companies investing in helping their workers get better
settlement in factories like Bourneville. Presently CSR involves policies set up by the company
and by law. According to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD),
CSR helps to create sustainable economic development. UAE has the fastest growing CSR
environment. The report features Ducab Company in UAE. Ducab deals in manufacturing high
quality wires, cables and cabling products. The wire and cable manufacturing industry has high
demand in the use of technology. Demand for quality products is high and is expected to increase
in future years, (SajadiFar, V., 2013).

Ducab CSR policies and Implementation

Ducab has practiced CSR policies for many years, recently, the company made these
policies official in its business. Ducab initiatives are of international and local standards and
have allowed the company to win the CSR label award cycle in 2012 and 2013. Its policies are
founded on four areas; the market, the workplace, community and the environment. Ducab
encourages employees to have a balanced work-life, employees grow as persons, spend time
with their families, fellow workmates and boost their health. Ducab’s CSR policy is founded on
community based development. Ducab organizes games such as football matches allowing the
employees to build teamwork and their health. The company has a health and safety management

system in line with legal and policy requirements. Workers at Ducab use chemically hazardous
materials and sometimes work with electricity and high temperature furnaces, appropriate safety
measures such as clothes to protect them are provided by the company. The company treats all
environmentally hazardous materials before disposing them. Waste water from these processes is
recycled and directed to the trees planted on Jebel Ali site. Ducab’s ‘power over fire’ campaign
involved educating the public on hazards of fire, sub-standard cables and how to prevent fires.
The campaign also introduced a variety of fire resistant wires and cables, the products are
approved and available in the market. The gulf region has the fastest growing economies in the
world, however, the growth is held back by the large population of locals who are unemployed.
UAE introduced a policy that encourages emiratisation in the public and private sectors. Ducab
supports these plans by recruiting citizens of UAE. They Emiratisation program trains the
recruits in different areas of work to enable them operate shops or work in offices, (Ducab,
2016).

The Whistleblowing Policy in Ducab

The whistleblowing policy creates a platform of ethics and trust. It aims at dealing with
any form of malpractice from customers, employees and suppliers. The policy provides an
unbiased platform for the whistleblower to file allegations. Ducab has offices in each department
dedicated to allowing whistleblowers to raise their concern in a safe environment and allowing
follow up on the feedback. Displinary action by a management committee is performed after
investigations to punish the wrong doer.
There are regulations and laws protecting him from harassment, threats and negative
employment action, such as demotion. The identity of the whistleblower is kept undisclosed for

the entire period of the investigation, if the need occurs, the person disclosing the information
may be called upon to give a formal statement if the investigation requires the statement as part
of the evidence. The policy encourages people bringing complaints to add their names on the
form. This helps to make the investigation process easier and raises the credibility of the
complaint. In the investigations, the management committee assesses the seriousness of the
issues, credibility of complaints and the ability to certify the issues from a reputable source, at
their desired discretion. Forwarding untrue and malicious allegation is discourages and may
attract reasonable displinary actions. The management committee forwards it findings,
recommendations and preferred displinary action to the board of directors or a committee
representing them for approval and performance. The committee may recommend an internal
response to punish the offender or it may take the matter further to an external auditor or police.

Agree or Disagree and Opinion

Ducab has made thorough strides in structuring its CSR policies to give adequate, all-
rounded advantages on the community and business. It gives guidance to companies in its
industry on how to expand beyond focusing on making profits solely. The ethical standards
policy outlining the whistleblowing strategy is effective and ensures fairness on the side of both
the person lodging complaints and the one being accused. However, its efforts should bases
themselves on philathrophy to include charity events in helping the community access quality
electricity cables and other non-profit charity events. I am of the opinion that the company is
headed on the right direction in implementing corporate social responsibility policies and
whistleblowing structures.

Conclusion

Ducab’s CSR policy is an example of a well structured outline on how a company can
involve the community and its shareholders in its business activities while ensuring that the
environment is protected. Ducab helps in creating a sustainable business environment and
promoting the three P’s of the business arena; people, planet and profits. Its efforts in
conservation and assisting the community in projects have allowed it to increase its profits and
produce people-safe and environmentally safe products. Its whistleblowing policy provides a
well balanced arena for the person bringing the complaint and the accussed, where both are
treated equally and according to the rule of law.
