Introduction
Birdi et al., (2008, p. 467) defines operations management as the management of business
practices to achieve maximum efficiency in an enterprise. This aims at transforming resources
and energy into goods and services to optimize the benefit of a company as efficiently as
possible by creating strategic operational activities within a company that align with the goals
and objectives of the company. Some of these strategies include employee empowerment that
highly involves providing proper training, a good working condition and a proper compensation
to employees to maximize their production. Maximization of a company’s production is
beneficial to the company as it increases its overall performance in the market improving the
revenues incurred by the company. Burns, (2007, p. 3) explains that a strategic system is a
computer system that implements business policies; it is the systems in which information
system resources are applied to strategic business opportunities so as to affect the products and
business operations of the organization. The two factors are important to an organization since
they work hand in hand to improve on the competency level of an organization's production or
performance.
Abu Dhabi Media is a successful company in the UAE, the company's operations
management and strategic systems are very important considering that the company deals with
many media platforms. The company has to have proficient operations and systems strategies to
ensure that all activities in their platform are done accordingly. Media mainly deals with
networks and systems and in case there is a slight system malfunction it can compromise the
whole company’s brand. The objective of this research is to establish the various ways in which
operations management and strategic systems are used in organizations and to also identify the
various ways the two factors are beneficial to an organization.

However, operations management and system strategies are very challenging to operate
and may take time for employees to get used to, as explained by Fitzsimmons, Fitzsimmons, and
Bordoloi, (2008, p. 45). This may prove to be very problematic to the organization due to the
risky chances of continuous mistakes among the employees. Nevertheless, the study of these two
factors is very significant in the success of a company; most successful companies globally have
incorporated the strategic use of operations management and strategic systems.
Abu Dhabi Media
Abu Dhabi Media is the official media organization of the government of Abu Dhabi; the
media house was established in 2007. The company has various brands that it manages including
Abu Dhabi TV, Abu Dhabi Al Emarat, sports channel, drama TV, and many more. The
organization has radio stations like Emarat FM, Abu Dhabi FM and many more; it also has a
publishing and websites platform where it provides magazines, newspapers, and articles. The
company has over 1800 employees, in 2008 the company established the Abu Dhabi media zone,
a student campus where Emirati students would be taught by foreign journalists and trained on
the different forms of journalism. I chose this company since it is a successful company in the
UAE despite its short existence meaning the company used very good strategies to work its way
through the market.
Methodology
In collection of data I used the qualitative methods of research since it helps in providing
detailed information on specific concepts of media operations and strategic systems. The study
involved 2 participants who are the head managers in Abu Dhabi Media Company in the UAE.
Khan Mohammed manages various operations in the company while Abdikadir Ali heads

technological systems used in the company. I organized the interview with the participants
informing them on the importance of the interview which is to contribute to the development of
operational managements among small and growing organizations. I also informed them on the
rules of conducting research such as they were free to decide on whether to participate in the
interview or not.
I developed the interview questions based on the objectives of my research to try and get
relevant information on the operation management and strategic system used in the organization.
My objective was to establish the various ways in which operations management and strategic
systems are used in organizations and to also identify the various ways the two factors are
beneficial to an organization. After the collection of results I analyzed the outcome of the
interview using qualitative method of analyzing data, specifically content analysis method. The
method involves comparing the information collected with literature from previous studies or
case studies conducted form other organizations.
I used the qualitative method of research to analyze data since my topic of interest and
objectives require detailed and contextualized data that can only be collected from the field and
from experts who mainly deal with operation management departments within an organization. I
was able to collect a lot of detailed information from the two participants and compared it with a
lot of results from previous studies conducted on the topic to critically analyze the data collected.

1. What type of operation management/strategy does your company implement?
We have majorly relied on technological type of operation as this strategy helps
employees to work faster and better. Adopting the technological system in the company has
increased the quality of work produced by the company.
2) How does your company’s operation management/strategy align with your business strategy?
Our business strategy is strengthening the performance of our employees through training
programs that equip them with the necessary skills to perform their jobs well; we have also
invested in technology which has assisted employees to work faster and in an efficient manner.
3) In terms of operations, how does your company manage inventories? What kinds of strategies
are used in managing the inventories?
In inventories technology is a key factor since we deal with a lot of media outlets, they all
have their own inventories prepared by their respective departments, however, as the
management team we have to go through them and ascertain their credibility.
4) What is your company’s customer strategy? How is it improved?
Our customer strategy is first attracting customers to our channels after that we ensure
that we fully satisfy their needs by improving the quality of our services by first engaging with
consumers to fully understand what they require and want.

In capacity management we deal with three key factors which are workload, service
factor and present capacity with these factors we can be able to determine whether there is a need
for more system capacity to handle the desired service factor.

company efficiency and productivity?
We work very closely with our employees since they are the main determinants of the
companies' productivity and efficiency; we ensure that every employee is trained properly for
their jobs. We also provide a good working environment with good compensation to all
employees which increase their motivation to work in the company.
7) In terms of quality management system, how does your company work on enhancing
product/service quality?
We have really invested in technology, currently, almost all technological equipments in
the organization are updated which makes work easier and faster, it also improves the quality of
products or services that we produce. We ensure that we provide the employees with better tools
of operation to increase their efficiency.
8) What kind of research and development does your company undertake to innovate and
produce new products/services?
As we have already created a media school in Abu Dhabi we have also invested in
research in the school where we provide the necessary equipments required for research to our
