Introduction
On December 31, 2019 in Wuhan, China the first cases of a new Coronavirus were
reported. Over two months, the virus also known as COVID-19 to public health experts has
spread beyond Wuhan, across China, and around the world. On January 30, 2020, the World
Health Organization (WHO) declared the Coronavirus outbreak a public health emergency of
international concern.
Role of Media to give Awareness to People about Corona Virus
As COVID-19 spreads in the U.S., China, and African countries, social media platforms
like Facebook and Twitter, which didn't exist or barely existed during past major outbreaks, are
facilitating important conversations about the virus, while at the same time allowing
misinformation to spread(Nooh,2020). Furthermore, the unprecedented level of real-time
information at our fingertips can both give us the tools we need to make smart decisions, but also
make us more anxious about what to expect experts say. The optimistic view is that social media
could prove useful at a time when many of us are isolated from one another. Conversations
around the coronavirus, especially those at the community level, can help us navigate this crisis.
According to Alsulaiman(2018), scientists and other public health experts are also using social
media to more directly engage with the public or discuss emerging research of the pandemic
while educating the public on preventive measures, while community leaders are using it to form
social networks to help vulnerable neighbors that have no idea about the virus or how to prevent
it from spreading. But for every medical expert trying to share accurate information or
community leader organizing an awareness campaign, there are thousands of users spreading
false rumors and other forms of disinformation(Wen,2020). With contradictory information

about COVID-19 emerging from the highest levels of government, experts say it’s more
important than ever for those with accurate information to be sure that they are being heard.
According to Kouzy (2020), the algorithms that project what we see on social media
typically promote content that garners the most engagement from posts that attract more
individuals to get spread farthest through social media platforms. Researchers argue that social
media can be used to spread false information hence attracting the attention of many which may
cause a global panic. However, social media platforms have generally taken an aggressive stance
toward countering coronavirus misinformation because moderating such information is safer
than allowing the spread of false information that can lead to huge calamity and death of
innocent lives. Medical Experts say social media is changing the way society is perceiving and
responding to the COVID-19 outbreak. Humans take cues from other humans, and they may be
more likely to behave like them especially if they see other people posting about their activities.
For example, if people see photos of their friends out and about on Facebook, ignoring the call to
practice “social distancing,” they might be more likely to go out too. Furthermore, footage and
data from hard-hit places like China and Italy have given us ample reason to prepare for what we
know is coming.
Conclusion
Through media platforms and watching news individuals can see the impact, Corona
Virus has on mass especially if social distancing is not adhered to. Also most of the towns are in
lockdown and people have been advised to stay at home to prevent the spread of the virus and in
case one is forced to go out, regular use of soap or hand-based sanitizers will be effective to kill
the germs which last for 24 hours. Also, congestion of individuals in one place has been

prohibited by the media which has a lot been effected on public transport where they are only
allowed to carry few people and the vehicles should be fumigated before boarding of passengers.
