Importance Of Writing a Literature Review
The question is:
Answer the following question.
Reflect on the first part of the course during which we developed
understanding of a number of elements of the research process.
Choose two of these and, in detail, explain what they are and why they
are important. In what ways could they be considered useful ‘life
skills’? Be specific.
These are the two elements I chose
1. Writing aLiterature review
2. Design and construct a survey
Solution
Writing a Literature Review
A literature review is a complete summary of earlier research on a subject matter. The
literature review analyses books and scholarly articles that are relevant to the subject of study. It
describes, enumerates, summarizes and describes the previous research through selective writing
trying to find a gap that was left in the previous research work to warrant the current research.
The process of writing a literature review involves introducing a topic, providing background
information, the discussion of the article and a conclusion section.
Writing a literature review has improved my research skills and writing since it involves
extensive research and critically evaluating the surveys before writing. It also shows that my
research is original and proves its relevancy as it differs from other theoreticians. It is of essence
to have a firm understanding of the research topic that one is working on, and this is facilitated
by the literature review as it signifies that the basics of research are not neglected. This has made
me improve my writing skills in that, I now understand the importance of appraisals and
correlations of various scholarly sources and this is done through the writing of a literature
review.
Besides, I can share my thoughts towards a specific subject in the recommendations section. The
importance of writing a literature review is it contributes to excellent understanding of the issue
of study, aids one to locate their writing within the context of existing literature and, justifies the
methodology used (Pubrica, 2019). It also creates a good rapport with the readers of the research
as well as enabling one to avoid incidental plagiarism.
Design and Constructing a Survey
3
It is the process of generating surveys to gain maximum insight from survey
investigation. It involves either creating a survey from scratch or using a study that was already
created by another person. The process consists identification on the topic of research, asking
relevant questions whether open-ended or closed-ended, using simple words, analyzing the
responses after completing the design, and simplifying it to stay in line with the topic. Through
this, I have learnt how to make use of online survey software’s where one can reach the
respondents online and get the necessary feedback with no much costs involved. In case I have a
constraint of time when doing my work, I now know that the use of online survey is the way to
go.
The process of designing a survey has helped me generate additional skills in designing
and construction of surveys as well as improved my decision-making skills since I had to choose
between two or more answers to remain with the best choice. Its importance includes the
provision of accurate data while studying statistics of large populations. According to Defranzo
(2012), designing a survey is flexible as it can be administered in different models like online
and paper surveys.
