Sleep Patterns and Habits
The results displayed and described below are derived from various respondents who
participated in a survey answering questions on the theme question of the study which was “do
university students have enough sleep?”. Unstable sleep patterns among students are caused by
factors such as stress, use of drugs, jet lag; drug usage is more common among university
students and the stress levels are also heightened due to academics.
Discussion and Analysis
Figure One
In Figure one, 56% of the respondents indicated that changing their sleep schedule
negatively affected their sleeping patterns. 19% of the respondents had a positive outcome after
changing their sleeping schedule. 12% of the respondents did not have any changes happening to

them and 13 % of the respondents did not know if the impact of changing sleeping patterns in
their body which is unusual.

In figure 2, over 74% of students who participated in the survey altered their sleeping
habits in one way or the other. 17% of the participants did not change their sleeping habits while
9% did not know whether they had changed their sleeping habits or not.

Figure 3 shows the different behaviors that are adopted by students in college in a high
and low capacity. Over 38.7% of the participants have less sleep which might be caused by a
different number of factors like stress or drug use, 24.3% of respondents in the survey had
changed their eating habits. 18.6% of the participants had created a more studying and 16.1% of
the participants had reduced the time they spent with their family members and 2.3% of the
participants indicated that they had increased their sleeping time and were able to sleep longer
than before.

Figure 4 illustrates the effects of bad sleep patterns in males which might highly differ
from that of females due to the different genetic compositions in a male's body. From this figure
66.6% of males reported a certain change in their health after changing their sleeping patterns.
16.6% also cited an impact in their concentration levels after having bad sleep patterns, 11.8% of
the respondents cited having mood changes due to bad sleep patterns. Only 5.0% of the
respondents had their academic performance affected.

Figure 5 shows the effects of bad sleep patterns in females; from the results in figure 4
and figure 5 it is clear that there is a huge difference between how bad sleep patterns affect men

and women. The number of women health-wise was at 47.2% which is lower than that of males.
38.1% of women indicated that their level of concentration had been greatly affected by bad
sleep patterns. 9.3% of women reported having been affected in their academic performance
which is the least affected factor in males. 5.4% of females had their moods affected by bad
sleeping patterns, due to the normal increased rate of brain activity among females.
