“ Crisis management focusing on the food security in UAE “
– You can go over the topic of food security in UAE and also talk about the situation in
Pandemic of Covid-19 and how the UAE managed its resources of food and what are the
dangerous gaps that could have turned the situation worse if the pandemic virus got
muted or became more deadly. How is UAE going to manage it and what should it do for
future crisis that might affect its food security. This is the general idea
– Important note : this project is continues which means that I will be continuing to work on
it this semester, so please provide the best outcome that can be helpful throughout the
semester.
Note :
– Discuss whether this project would be a quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods
research and the reasons you believe these approach, design and methods are the most
suitable for analyzing your topic.

Solution
Food Security in the UAE
The covid-19 outbreak has been a great wake up call for many countries in terms of food
security; most supply chain distributions were disrupted, leaving countries that mainly use
imported food at risk of a food shortage. Elouafi (2020) indicates that the UAE imports
approximately 85-90% of its food, but in the last few years, the country has taken significant
measures towards improving food production in the country, which will help the country,
mitigate disruptions in the food supply chain. Mariam Bint Mohammad Saeed Hareb Al Muhairi,
the state minister for food security, indicated that the food challenges brought about by Covid-19
had presented a new opportunity for the country to build a more flexible system of food supply
chain in the country.
The minister has also encouraged people to consume more local foods to promote local
farmers and encourage their farming indulgence. There are many dangerous food security gaps
that the UAE has to fill. In case covid-19 was more deadly than it is, the country could have
significantly suffered from a shortage of food as other countries would hold on the exportation of
food to other countries, highly impacting countries that depend on imported food. This Project
will mainly look at some of the gaps and opportunities that the UAE can use to enhance the rate
of their food security and other definitive measures that the country can take to create long term
solutions to this issue.
How well will UAE manage the food crisis and what should it do for a future crisis that
might affect its food security?
In terms of dealing with the challenge of food security in the country, the UAE has
invested in scientifically managed agriculture, where they use a lot of modern agricultural

interventions to increase their food production rate. Ohannessian and Kennedy (2020) designate
that the country's agricultural ministry has also taken measures to increase food reserves abroad
where the UAE purchases a fertile land in a foreign land with a friendlier agricultural
environment and practice agriculture in that region. This measures are however temporary as the
government increases the rate of agricultural land in the country to reduce any type of
dependency on other countries. Other than the government's already existing measures to help
reduce the high rate of food importation to the country, the government is looking to develop
more fertile grounds in the country and increase the practice of agriculture in the country. Lack
of proper food security can lead to a situation where the country is forced to import low quality
goods from any country willing to offer goods, this was witnessed in Qatar during the boycott of
Arabic nations. Qatar was forced to import low quality goods from Turkey and Iran.
The country has managed to increase its water harvest and treatment from the sea; the
government has to support agricultural practices in the country now. It is becoming increasingly
likely that the world is also likely to face a global economic shutdown and a public health crisis.
The UAE needs to step forward with a good strategy that will help the country deal with any
impending crisis or reduce the level of damage and economic crisis (Sengupta, 2020). My
Project will dig deep into these solutions and their possible effects on the country's level of food
security; my Project will involve highly inclusive research that will use a qualitative research
method.
Why the Project will Use a Qualitative Research Method
I choose to use the qualitative research method since it can provide rich detailed
information on the nature of the topic and the result collected on the ground. Qualitative research
is more about collecting data to help make meaningful decisions (McClain & Madrigal, 2012).

My research is about food security in the country, and it will also look at some essential solutions
that the government can pick up to help increase the rate of food security in the country. People's
and authorities' feelings and opinions on the level of food security in the country are important.
Working with qualitative research will help me measure the countries' general ideas or solutions
towards improving the country's food security rate.
The qualitative research method is more flexible, which gives me room to change
questions based on the usefulness of the replies I get from people regarding my research
question. I want to guide my research and not the other way around where my study guides me; a
qualitative research method gives me the freedom to choose where to investigate and what to
investigate upon. Many factors lead to food insecurity in the country, and I would like to look at
all of them.
Why the Project will not Use a Quantitative Research Method and Mixed Research
Method
A quantitative research method is a suitable research method, but it does not match with
the objectives and wants of my research. According to McClain and Madrigal (2012), the
quantitative research method is highly limited in terms of data collection methods, and
sometimes researchers have to work with superficial datasets. My data has to be reliable to the
government and has to offer rational solutions to the issue of food security in the country.
Quantitative research results are also hard to comprehend since they are offered in
numerical descriptions rather than narratives providing less detailed accounts and human
perceptions of the issue. I want to control the environment in which I am working on, and I want
to choose the people who will be interviewed to provide their analysis and opinions on the

country's state of food security. The issue of food security is dreadful and needs fast solutions
that will oversee the possibility of any disasters including natural disasters, which are likely to
affect food production on a larger scale. With all this requirements quantitative research will not
be able to provide a conclusive and fast research since it is highly time consuming.
Mixed method research will not be used in this research since it is highly complex and
both types of data will have to be transformed and integrated during the analysis, which is
difficult and increases the chance of confusion and errors in the region. The methods rate
inequality between the two different techniques of research which might results to poor
interpretation of data which might disadvantageous to the reliability and consistency of the study.
